City Councilman Hiram Monserrate (D-East Elmhurst) got a surprise boost to his possible campaign when Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he would endorse Monserrate if he ran against state Sen. John Sabini (D-Jackson Heights) this fall, the Daily News reported Sunday.
Monserrate, who will be term-limited out of his City Council seat in 2009, confirmed that Bloomberg had spoken to him at a luncheon for congestion pricing supporters last Thursday. He said he did not expect the mayor to offer the endorsement.

When asked if he thought the mayor's backing would matter to his constituents, Monserrate said, "I think that no one can dispute that the mayor has been effective at being the mayor of the city of New York and that he enjoys a pretty high favorable rating for New Yorkers."Monserrate narrowly lost to the incumbent Sabini in the 2006 state senate elections.

YFP Editorial: Monserrate voted for Bloomberg's congestion pricing plan which was recently defeated.
