Paging Dr. House: Pro-Gustavo Rivera Docs Diagnose Espada-Itis

It might take a master diagnostician to find out just what's up in the Bronx (and I say that as a daughter of that beautiful borough.)

A bunch of scrubs -- no, literally -- affiliated with SEIU Healthcare are making house calls in the Bronx on behalf of Gustavo Rivera, who hopes to knock out state Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada, Jr. in tomorrow's SD 33 primary.

"In its first-ever New York State endorsement, the 13,000-member Committee of Interns and Residents recently threw its weight behind Bronx upstart Gustavo Rivera - part of the union's beefed up political program aimed at leveraging members and resources to win stronger health and safety standards at New York's hospitals. Despite being political newcomers, CIR is already playing a big role: contributing $4,500, tapping 2,000+ members, and turning out volunteer ground troops for a major GOTV effort that includes canvassing, phone-banking, poll-watching, and fliering," said a statement.

Espada, who has been attacked from all sides as he tries to hold on to his office, recently received the backing of former state Independence Party chief Lenora Fulani and a group of Bronx clergy and says he's not giving up.

THE SMELL OF POPCORN

Off Broadway plays are a muddle of hit and miss experiments. The ones that succeed are the result of creative Darwinism. The Smell of Popcorn is one of those plays that could evolve into a major Broadway hit. Provocative, simple and yet profound.

Based on a true story, it begins with a standard "bad guy robs good girl" story line. Then, the psycho drama starts. We are forced to analyze where does evil and goodness fuse. The play asks us to look beneath the obvious and to explore the personalities of the two main characters.
It is riveting at times and sad at others.

However, it is impossible to walk away without an opinion. The Smell of Popcorn is in a limited run. Teatro Aiti 64 E. 4th St. 212-352-3101 September 9-19th. Starring Javier Gomez and Luciana Faulhaber.

Islamic Reflections Allah Hu Akbar

"I am a Muslim by faith....
a Christian by spirit....
a Jew by heart....
and above all I am a human being."

Dr. Tawfik Hamid.

Dr. Hamid is an Egyptian scholar and author
opposed to Islam fundamentalism.

From the heart of a Muslim -
Tawfik Hamid

I was born a Muslim and lived all my life as a follower of Islam.
After the barbaric terrorist attacks done by the hands of my fellow Muslims everywhere on this globe, and after the too many violent acts by Islamists in many parts of the world, I feel responsible as a Muslim and as a human being, to speak out and tell the truth to protect the world and Muslims as well from a coming catastrophe and war of civilizations.
I have to admit that our current Islamic teaching creates violence and hatred toward Non-Muslims. We Muslims are the ones who need to change. Until now we have accepted polygamy, the beating of women by men, and killing those who convert from Islam to other religions.

We have never had a clear and strong stand against the concept of slavery or wars, to spread our religion and to subjugate others to Islam and force them to pay a humiliating tax called Jizia. We ask others to respect our religion while all the time we curse non-Muslims loudly (in Arabic) in our Friday prayers in the Mosques.

What message do we convey to our children when we call the Jews "Descendants of the pigs and monkeys".. Is this a message of love and peace, or a message of hate?
I have been into churches and synagogues where they were praying for Muslims. While all the time we curse them, and teach our generations to call them infidels, and to hate them.
We immediately jump in a 'knee jerk reflex' to defend Prophet Mohammed when someone accuses him of being a paedophile while, at the same time, we are proud with the story in our Islamic books, that he married a young girl seven years old (Aisha) when he was above 50 years old.

I am sad to say that many, if not most of us, rejoiced in happiness after September 11th and after many other terror attacks.
Muslims denounce these attacks to look good in front of the media, but we condone the Islamic terrorists and sympathise with their cause. Till now our 'reputable' top religious authorities have never issued a Fatwa or religious statement to proclaim Bin Laden as an apostate, while an author, like Rushdie, was declared an apostate who should be killed according to Islamic Shania law just for writing a book criticizing Islam.

Muslims demonstrated to get more religious rights as we did in France to stop the ban on the Hejab (Head Scarf), while we did not demonstrate with such passion and in such numbers against the terrorist murders.
It is our absolute silence against the terrorists that gives the energy to these terrorists to continue doing their evil acts. We Muslims need to stop blaming our problems on others or on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. As a matter of honesty, Israel is the only light of democracy, civilization, and human rights in the whole Middle East .

We kicked out the Jews with no compensation or mercy from most of the Arab countries to make them "Jews-Free countries" while Israel accepted more than a million Arabs to live there, have its nationality, and enjoy their rights as human beings. In Israel , women can not be beaten legally by men, and any person can change his/her belief system with no fear of being killed by the Islamic law of 'Apostasy,' while in our Islamic world people do not enjoy any of these rights. I agree that the 'Palestinians' suffer, but they suffer because of their corrupt leaders and not because of Israel .

It is not common to see Arabs who live in Israel leaving to live in the Arab world. On the other hand, we used to see thousands of Palestinians going to work with happiness in Israel , its 'enemy'. If Israel treats Arabs badly as some people claim, surely we would have seen the opposite happening.

We Muslims need to admit our problems and face them. Only then we can treat them and start a new era to live in harmony with human mankind. Our religious leaders have to show a clear and very strong stand against polygamy, paedophilia, slavery, killing those who convert from Islam to other religions, beating of women by men, and declaring wars on non-Muslims to spread Islam.

Then, and only then, do we have the right to ask others to respect our religion. The time has come to stop our hypocrisy and say it openly: 'We Muslims have to Change'.
Tawfik Hamid

Happy moments, PRAISE GOD.Difficult moments, SEEK GOD.Quiet moments, WORSHIP GOD.Painful moments, TRUST GOD.Every moment, THANK GOD!

MUSLIMS WHO DIED IN 9-11 ATTACK

On the eve of the anniversary of 9-11, little is said about the Muslims who perished. Ground Zero Mosque opponents rally in the name of Christianity. They have chosen to delete the ghosts of Islam. They have chosen to burn the Koran. They have forgotten that there was a mosque in the Pentagon where worshippers were killed.

Their names are etched in the ashes. Their names will never be forgotten.

ESPADA's BUSINESS "SUE..T'S"

Vijay Tharwani and his father are the owners of CUSTOM MEN at 140 W. 57th Street. Unlike the pretentiously slick, chicly designed tailor shops in other parts of Manhattan, theirs is a tasteful nuts and bolts arena. The emphasis is on well made suits and a comfortable atmosphere.

Vijay works seventy hours a week. His soft spoken hard work has paid off. CUSTOM MEN boasts clients such as Colin Powell and other well knowns. Their photos decorate the walls. One such "well known" paid a visit back in 2009.

State Senator Pedro Espada enlisted the services of CUSTOM MEN. He ordered several custom made suits. Not content to venture downtown, Espada summoned the tailors to his Soundview Health Care Center in the Bronx. One can only wonder why they were not dispatched to his Senatorial District offices at 400 E. Fordham Road and 3328 Bainbridge Avenue in the Bronx.

The fitting was made and the order placed. The address to which Espada asked that the order be sent was the Soundview Healthcare Center 731 White Plains Road, Bronx, N.Y. The bill was issued to Pedro Espada at that address. When the order arrived, Espada was displeased with the length of the cuffs. He called Vijay and asked for an adjustment. Tharwani instructed him to return the items and they would be altered. Those items never arrived.

Weeks passed and Vijay had a payroll to meet and rent to pay. He sent a bill for $7,200 which went unpaid. Vijay decided to file his own "suit" against Espada for the money. Espada claims that the items were returned. However, calls to the Espada office produced neither a return receipt or a tracking number. What does appear is Pedro Espada nattily dressed in the very suits that CUSTOM MEN made for him. Vijay recognizes the materials. Some which cost $500 per yard.

So, folks, it would appear that Petey has pulled another fast one. This time, it affects a hard working guy trying to pay his employees and pay his rent. Vijay Tharwani is not a rich man.
He is an honest man who believed in the credibility of a guy who said he could be trusted because he was State Senator Pedro Espada.

Police Called to Espada Giveaway Event Over the Weekend

Photos by Adi Talwar, Story by Jeanmarie Evelly

[Ed. Note: these photos were briefly posted on Saturday afternoon, but removed so we could provide a fuller picture of what happened.]

Tensions were running high at a campaign event hosted by Sen. Pedro Espada, Jr. -- and crashed by a group of vociferous anti-Espada protesters -- on the second to last weekend before the Sept. 14 primary.

Espada was handing out free bags of groceries to residents in his district outside of the Mosholu branch of the New York Public Library, at 285 E.205th St., when the police were called to moderate a scuffle between a member of Espada’s staff and a political blogger, Rafael Martinez Alequin.

Martinez Alequin is a City Hall gadfly who runs a blog called Your Free Press and who has a contentious relationship with Espada. He sued the Senator’s son two years ago for breaking his camera during a scuffle at a parade.

At this weekend’s event, according to a witness, one of Espada’s staff members was filming Martinez Alequin with a cell phone camera. Martinez Alequin then knocked the cell phone away, he said.

“We were shocked about that, because it’s not right,” said Haile Rivera, who works for Espada’s campaign. The man who was filming Martinez Alequin was a staff member who volunteers on weekends, he said.

“He was just holding it in front of his face, and kind of taunting him,” said Patrick Wynne, who was watching the drama from across the street, where he and other members of the New Roosevelt Initiative — an Anti-Espada political group that’s supporting rival candidate Gustavo Rivera — were holding up signs to protest the Senator.

“As soon as [Martinez-Alequin] raised his hand, the Espada folks just started screaming, ‘He assaulted him!’” Wynne continued, adding that the police were called and took statements from both sides.

The New Roosevelt protesters were also asked to move across the street, where they had got into a chanting match with some of Espada’s staff.

“They tried to intimitade, us getting up in our faces, you know, that stuff. But it doesn’t phase our volunteers,” said Yorman Nunez, the head of the New Roosevelt Initiative’s Bronx office.

Espada, meanwhile, steered clear of the conflict — staying in his car for a while before coming out to briefly greet the residents who’d shown up to claim their free groceries.

“He was there maybe less than 10 minutes,” Wynne said.

Attorney general hopeful Richard Brodsky up for the job

Wednesday, September 8th 2010, 4:00 AM

Richard Brodsky is one of five candidates vying for Democratic nomination for attorney general.
Monaster/News
Richard Brodsky is one of five candidates vying for Democratic nomination for attorney general.

Smart politicians know lunchtime at a senior center assures an attentive audience.

So around noon Tuesday, Richard Brodsky, the bulldog assemblyman from Westchester County, suddenly appeared at the JASA senior citizen center in Rockaway Park, Queens - the second of three senior centers he visited in an hour in the same neighborhood.

About 40 people were gathered around a half-dozen tables, waiting patiently for their lunch.

Audrey Pheffer, the local assemblywoman, gave a quick introduction to Brodsky - one of five candidates vying for the Democratic nomination for attorney general in Tuesday's primary.

"That's Brodsky with a 'B'," he joked as he rushed from table to table shaking hands.

"I'm Reshevsky with a 'v'," quipped Caroline Reshevsky, surrounded by a group of her girlfriends.

"Why did they change from voting machines to paper ballots?" Reshevsky wanted to know. "That's gonna cause problems."

Brodsky nodded in agreement. He's been one of the few politicians, he told her, warning that the new system of electronic voting on paper ballots could produce major foulups next week when voters use it for the first time.

"They brought a machine in and showed us how to use it," someone shouted.

A white-haired woman with a walker pulled him aside.

"Are you running for the same seat as [state Sen. Eric] Schneiderman?" she whispered.

"Yes, I am."

"He's my cousin," the woman said.

"Well, remember this, I came to visit you today and he didn't," Brodsky said with a smile.

It was the kind of rapid-fire banter Brodsky is known for in Albany, where he has spent nearly 30 years as a maverick populist legislator.

All five Democrats in this race are capable candidates. Several, including Schneiderman and Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice, have raised more money. A few are more easygoing and less confrontational than Brodsky.

But none has displayed the consistent courage to challenge powerful interests - or the attention to detailed investigations - that Brodsky has.

You could start with the hundreds of millions of dollars former Gov. Pataki and Mayor Bloomberg provided in subsidies for the new Yankee Stadium.

Brodsky was virtually alone among politicians in challenging that kind of financial help for baseball's richest team.

He lost that fight, but he was on the winning side of two other huge battles with Bloomberg - against congestion pricing and against the building of a new Jets stadium on Manhattan's West Side.

After the big Con Ed blackout in 2006, Brodsky sued and won more than $40 million in reimbursements for ratepayers from the company.

As head of the Assembly's committee on public authorities, he forced the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to provide more transparent reporting of its finances.

Last year, he led the successful effort for the Public Authorities Reform Act. Under the new law, hundreds of secretive public authorities have become more accountable to the taxpayers.

The last thing Brodsky's powerful enemies want is for the gadfly from Westchester County to be our state's new attorney general.

PADERNACHT ENDORSES GUSTAVO RIVERA, CALLS FOR UNITY AGAINST ESPADA

Dan Padernacht, candidate for State Senate of the 33rd Senatorial District released the following statement on not seeking the Democratic nomination for State Senate and backing Gustavo Rivera.
"I want to thank Bronx Borough President Rubén Diaz, Jr. Comptroller John Liu, NYS Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, 1199 SEIU and 32 BJ for their great show of support fo me today.
"After careful exmination of this race— I made the tough decision to step out of one of the most important races in this state. The Democrats in our district have an opportunity to unseat Pedro Espada and effect change in Albany. Today, I am uniting with Gustavo Rivera to offer Democrats a clear choice. We need a more unified democratic front against business as usual."

Gustavo Rivera is the consolidated face of challenge to Pedro Espada ahead of primary

By Kenneth Lovett

Gustavo Rivera (r.) is the lead challenger in a bid to oust Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada in Tuesday's primary.

Gustavo Rivera (r.) is the lead challenger in a bid to oust Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada in Tuesday's primary.

ALBANY - The effort to oust controversial state Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada in the coming primary gained momentum after one of two challengers dropped out of the race Sunday.

With just over a week to go before next Tuesday's primary, Bronx lawyer Daniel Padernacht threw his support behind Gustavo Rivera, the leading challenger to Espada.

Padernacht said he reluctantly made the decision after looking at poll numbers and deciding a three-way race would essentially ensure Espada returning to the Senate.

"I think Pedro Espada is very powerful and the only way he is unseated is if we unify so I decided to do it," Padernacht said. "It's difficult for me, but at this point, the race is bigger than me and this is what's best for the district and the Democratic party."

He said he will hold a press conference Tuesday with Rivera in the district.

A recent poll by the News Roosevelt Initiative, a political comittee seeking to oust Espada, showed that had Padernacht stayed in the race, he would draw away anti-Espada votes from Rivera, making it more likely the scandal-scarred senator could squeak by in the primary.

Padernacht's name will still be on the ballot, but the fact he will ask supporters to vote for Rivera should tighten the race considerably for Rivera, who has received the backing of key unions, Democratic activists, and even some of Espada's fellow senators.

"It's a big boost for Gustavo's campaign," said Dan Levitan, a spokesman for the Working Families Party that is backing Rivera. "Any time you are running against an incumbent, you'd like it to be mano a mano."

Espada, who could not be reached for comment last night, has sought to portray Rivera as a pawn of outside-the-district interests and insists he'll defeat him.

Espada is the subject of a civil lawsuit by Attorney General Andrew Cuomo claiming he siphoned $14 million from the Bronx health clinics he founded. He is also the subject of a federal probe into his health clinic dealings as well as one by the Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson about whether he actually lives in his district.

He's also being sued by a Manhattan tailor who said Espada failed to pay a $7,200 bill for six custom-made suits he purchased.

BP Rubén Diaz Jr. and José Gustavo Rivera Meet With Residents of the Amalgamated Housing Corporation

Yesterday, Dan Padernacht, withdraw as a candidate for New York State Senate. He will join hand in hand with Rubén Diaz Jr. to elect J. Gustavo Rivera to retired Pedro Espada Jr. from the State Senate.

In the New York Times today, Mr. Padernacht said:
“I’m basically going to put all my support behind Gustavo right now so we can join forces as Democrats and try to knock Espada out,” Mr. Padernacht said in an interview Sunday night.

“We didn’t want to take the risk of Espada getting back into office.”

Mr. Padernacht’s name will still appear on the ballot, but he said he would spend the next eight days campaigning for Mr. Rivera and asking his supporters to back Mr. Rivera.

Mr. Rivera called Mr. Padernacht’s support a major development in the campaign. “Adding his strength to our own means that we will be able to take out this guy,” he said."

video by Rafael Martínez Alequín for YFP

While I was up at the Carolyn Maloney/Reshma Saujani debate (and believe me, we'll have much more on that), our Frank Lombardi reported:

The two Democratic challengers of Bronx state Sen. Pedro Espada Jr. joined forces today in a move that could increase prospects of defeating Espada in next Tuesday’s primary election in the 33rd Senate District.

Dan Padernacht, a 34-year-old community board member, formally threw his backing to fellow challenger Gustavo Rivera, 34, saying he wanted to create “a united front” against Espada and restore credible representation to the district.

“I believe it’s the right thing to do,” Padernacht said at press conference outside the Municipal Building in Manhattan, where he was joined by a bevy of elected officials who are backing Rivera’s campaign, which has drawn endorsements from potent unions and many Democratic elected officials.

Padernacht’s name is likely to remain on the ballot, however, because he didn’t officially withdraw before the end of the declination period last week. Padernacht said he will do everything he can in the remaining week of campaigning to let his supporters know he is no longer running and is now backing Rivera, a longtime political operative who is making his first bid to get himself elected to public office.

“He’s got all of my help, all of my support,” Padernacht said after getting praised by Rivera’s backers for putting his own political interests aside in order to back Rivera and prevent any splintering of the opposition vote in a race where every vote could make a difference.

With fewer than 10% of the district’s more than 100,000 enrolled Democrats expected to turn out, Padernacht could have siphoned off a few hundred votes from Rivera’s tally and boosted Espada’s odds of winning.

Among those on hand to congratulate Padernacht was former Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer, who commented, “ I wanted to take the time to salute someone who did the right thing. It doesn’t happen very often in this profession.”

freddy ferrer sans moustache.jpg

Freddy Ferrer sans moustache!

Ferrer, a former mayoral hopeful who recently shaved off his mustache after 42 years, denounced Espada as the most embarrassing “public official to have ever taken the oath of office.”

Also heaping praise on Padernacht were city Controller John Liu, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, Manhattan State Senators Eric Schneiderman (a candidate for attorney general) and Liz Krueger, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and Kevin Finnegan, representing health workers union 1199.

Diaz said “we know that Pedro Espada has been an embarrassment to us,” and praised Padernacht “for stepping aside” for the good of the constituents of the 33rd District.

“This is a call to conscience for the voters in the 33rd Senatorial District,” Diaz said, “ We must say No to Pedro Espada.”

Padernacht Out:

Democratic Party leaders and their allies in the effort to oust Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada Jr. have finally succeeded in convincing long-shot candidate Dan Padernacht to suspend his campaign and back the institutional favorite, Gustavo Rivera, in the upcoming Sept. 14 primary.

Padernacht was rumored to be considering this move for most of this afternoon and evening. The Times quotes the erstwhile candidate, whose name apparently will remain on the primary ballot in spite of his decision, thusly:

“I’m basically going to put all my support behind Gustavo right now so we can join forces as Democrats and try to knock Espada out. We didn’t want to take the risk of Espada getting back into office.”

Union, WFP and Democratic leaders have been trying to no avail to get Padernacht out of the race, even going so far as to have the New Roosevelt Initiative commissioned a poll that showed Espada was far more likely to hold onto his seat if he faced two challengers rather than just one.

The poll, conducted by Red Horse Strategies, found Epsada and River tied at 32 percent with 35 percent of voters undecided if Padernacht wasn’t in the running. New Roosevelt founder Bill Samuels released the following statement:

“We applaud Dan Padernacht’s decision to withdraw from the Democratic primary against disgraced State Senator Pedro Espada. Democrat Gustavo Rivera can win this race and with less than less than ten days until primary day, New York Democrats must redouble their efforts to insure his victory.”

We can have the best state Legislature in the country and it begins with the defeat of Espada.”

The deadline to get Padernacht’s name off the ballot has long since passed, although he is an attorney, so it’s possible he could be nominated for a judgeship – it could even be upstate – between now and primary day.

Even if he throws his support to Rivera, as long as Padernacht’s name still is available for voters to select, it’s possible he could be a spoiler – particularly in a low-turnout race that could be decided by just a few thousand, or even hundred, votes.

ESPADA'S SOLDIERS ON THE MARCH

While Petey Espada distributed food today, his assistants distributed harassment. As in previous Espada rallies, his aides took pictures of what they perceived as the enemy camp. However, on this occasion, one individual crossed the respected approach zone of your YFP editor. His threatening presence prompted my defensive reaction. The son of Pedro Espada (former City Council member Pedro Gautier Espada) then called 911. He falsely stated that I had a knife which knowingly would produce a quick and abundant police response.

Three patrol cars arrived. I was never frisked nor was a "knife" produced. The officers handled the situation with professionalism and courtesy. More than can be said for Espada's camp. Marcetta Harris (who threatened to have her brother to put me in a body bag) spewed her usual profanities and my digital assailant, Michael Gary feigned an injured finger that bore no proof of such. The only injury involving Michael Gary is injury to the system from which he is now collecting a disability salary according to undisclosed sources. And although he is on the payroll of Mr. Espada, it would appear that he is "double dipping."

Today proved to be another reason why Pedro Espada should not serve office. Who paid for those trucks that transported the food? Who paid for the signs that his staff posted? Who paid for the workers that accompanied him today? Sadly, the people of his district who should have a decent representative. That man is Gustavo Rivera.

NYT SAYS ESPADA SHOULD BE PUT DOWN

Quoted from a NYT editorial:

"Pedro Espada Jr., a Democrat running for re-election in the Bronx even though he mostly lives in the suburbs. Here are just a few reasons for voting against him: He owes more than $10,000 in fines for campaign finance violations (the maximum fine is $500 each); he is accused of milking his medical clinics for personal and political expenses including $20,000 worth of sushi delivered to his home in Westchester; he forced fellow senators to give him a fancy title and padded his office with a fawning entourage.

Mr. Espada has run a sleazy campaign, even threatening voters who signed petitions for his strongest and best opponent, Gustavo Rivera. Mr. Rivera, an educator and political activist, has promised to vote for the kind of real reforms the state needs. A third candidate in the race, Daniel Padernacht, is a real estate lawyer with little understanding of state issues. He is a distraction for voters whose goal should be to oust Mr. Espada.

Today, Petey made yet another feeble attempt to garner votes with carrots and cereal. Accompanied by his staff of thugs and thugettes, and his blinged out wife Connie, it was a pathetic show of a lame duck drowning. Too little, too late Petey.

A Fierce Fight in the Bronx

State Senator Pedro Espada Jr. watched his district in the northwest Bronx turn into a political battleground this summer as a broad coalition of labor unions, elected officials and political advocates joined forces to unseat him in the September 14 Democratic primary. Mr. Espada, who is facing civil corruption charges, is waging a hard-fought campaign. He has accused Gustavo Rivera, his main opponent, of being a puppet of outside forces. Below, four of Mr. Espada’s critics — and the senator himself — discuss the race, his challenger, and what is at stake in the 33rd district senate contest. Related Article »

Espada must go: Sleazeball Pedro leads list of Albany bums voters need to throw out

No member of the Legislature more epitomizes the corruption, rank dishonesty and sleaze permeating the Capitol than Bronx Sen. Pedro Espada Jr.

Among all the bums who must be thrown out, Espada should be first.

West Bronx residents are fortunate to have a solid choice in Gustavo Rivera, a well-informed up-and-comer who welcomes accountability.

A vote for Rivera in the Sept. 14 primary is a vote for cleaner government.

The grounds for dumping Espada, poster boy for Albany insanity, are almost beyond imagining.

He was the party-flipping, power-grabbing instigator of the Senate coup last summer that paralyzed Albany for a month.

He also stands credibly accused by state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo of looting $14 million from a taxpayer-financed chain of health clinics.

On top of that, Espada notoriously lives outside his district, in Mamaroneck; persistently ignores campaign finance laws, and is even being sued for allegedly stiffing his tailor on $7,200 worth of fancy suits.

Rivera bears no such ethical taint. His professional background consists mainly of campaigning for Democrats, including President Obama. He most recently worked as an aide to U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. He also teaches political science part time at Pace University.

While this page is not in sync with Rivera on some issues, he is likely in line with the sensibilities of the district and is surely in tune with the economic interests of working New Yorkers.

Importantly, Rivera has signed former Mayor Ed Koch's pledge to support key reforms in Albany. There's every reason to believe he will keep his word and no reason to think Espada would do the same. The Daily News endorses Gustavo Rivera for Senate in the 33rd District.

There are eight additional contested legislative races in the Bronx, in virtually all of which the incumbent scoffs at reforming Albany. Most were also guilty this year of pushing the Metropolitan Transportation Authority toward raising fares while brazenly deceiving voters about their roles in contributing to the hikes.

There's a test for determining whether a member of the Senate or Assembly is content with Albany's mire: Did he or she commit in writing to a reform agenda advanced by a grassroots campaign under Koch's leadership?

The agenda includes ending partisan gerrymandering of legislative districts, putting the Legislature under real ethics enforcement and imposing procedures for honest budgeting.

Koch's group, New York Uprising, has dubbed those who signed the pledge Heroes of Reform. Those who refused are Enemies of Reform. Candidates are listed below in both categories.

Remember when Tony Avella wanted to take on the whole city? He ran for mayor last year as a beacon of purity in a government of scoundrels, promising "to change the way city government operates."

Now he's running for state senate, and judging by the first of the three press releases we've received from him today, his sights are a little lower:

Avella Alerts City Agencies to Dangerous Traffic Situation

Avella was campaigning on 35th Avenue and the Clearview Expressway when he was alerted by area residents that the traffic light at the intersection was not working creating a dangerous traffic condition.

(snip: He called the precinct. He called 311. Crews arrived quickly. Everyone was safe.)

Avella stated: "I was just happy that I was in the right place at the right time and that I was able to alert the proper people to remedy this dangerous situation."

Guess he doesn't want to change how 311 operates, at least. Full release after the jump.

Avella Alerts City Agencies to Dangerous Traffic Situation

WHITESTONE, NY On Saturday, August 28th, former City Council Member and now candidate for the New York State Senate (11th District), Tony Avella was campaigning on 35th Avenue and the Clearview Expressway when he was alerted by area residents that the traffic light at the intersection was not working creating a dangerous traffic condition.

Avella immediately reached out to the 111th Police Precinct to notify them of the situation and get an officer out to the location to help direct traffic. In addition, he also put in a complaint to 311 to alert the city to the problem. Within 10 minutes of the call a supervisor from the City's electrical contractor, Welsbach, showed up on site to survey the situation and alert the appropriate electrical crew to fix the signal. Avella stated "I was just happy that I was in the right place at the right time and that I was able to alert the proper people to remedy this dangerous situation."

Precinct personnel did arrive on scene to ensure safe traffic flow and within a couple of hours a Welsbach crew arrived and made the necessary repairs.
