Mayor Bloomberg said the official U.S. Census count must have gone 'awry' and missed tens of thousands of residents in a formal challenge Wednesday. Mayor Bloomberg has formally challenged a Census Bureau count he says missed tens of thousands of New Yorkers.
"Some aspect of the census [count] went awry," he wrote to census director Robert Groves.
The mayor said the bureau made "egregious" errors like counting occupied apartments as vacant in Brooklyn neighborhoods like Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst, and Astoria and Jackson Heights in Queens.
The count determines how much money the city gets from the state and the feds and how well it's represented in Washington and Albany.
