State Senator Efrain Gonzalez, Jr. (D-Bronx) today led a joint emergency press conference with the Stella D’oro Biscuit Company workers, B.C.T.G.M. Local 50, local elected officials, members of the clergy, and community-based organizations. Stella D’Oro employees went on strike on Aug. 13 outside the Broadway factory, and have been holding a 24-hour picket line every day to protest what they described as an unfair contract.
There has been no communication between the union and the management since negotiations fell apart at the end of last month. Workers were notified in writing on Friday, August 29th that the company had taken steps to replace them with new non-union workers. The decision sparked an emergency chain reaction by the community.
“We are here symbolically on Labor Day in solidarity with working families protesting against unfair labor practices and negotiations by Connecticut-based Brynwood Partners, owners of the Stella D’Oro facility,” said Senator Gonzalez, Jr. “I am deeply concerned about the failed negotiations between Brynwood and Local 50 and the corporate maneuver to displace workers within the community.
