WAY TO HEAVEN (HIMMELWEG)
By Juan Mayorga - Directed by Matthew Earnest
Presented in English (live simultaneous Spanish-language translation available)
A production of Equilicuá Producciones & Puy Navarro. Presented by Repertorio Español
“A perversely theatrical chapter of the Holocaust is hauntingly re-enacted in Juan Mayorga’s play ‘Way to Heaven,’ about the sham Jewish settlement at Theresienstadt, or Terezin, in what is now the Czech Republic, set up by the Nazis to persuade observers that Jews were held in humane conditions. A makebelieve utopia, Theresienstadt (the German name) was an effective propaganda tool. In reality, it was a concentration camp, and a way station leading to Auschwitz and other death camps. This spare, eloquent work, leanly directed by Matthew Earnest, is a powerful illustration of how theatrical artifice can be pressed into the service of atrocity.” - Andy Webster, The New York Times
“A striking play...” - The London Times
Smart, riveting, an immensely powerful and important play.” - Julie Congress, nytheatre.com Reviewer’s Pick
“Mayorga’s play emphasises starkly the propensity of human beings to blind themselves to the fate of their fellow creatures.” - The London Times
“Juan Mayorga’s stunning play brings it all home” - Richard McBee, The Jewish Press

ReplyDeleteYeah, but the Euro is failing because we didn't get everyone on board with it. If we just do it again, only harder, you know, get the whole world under one currency like Mr. Soros says...well, then it'll work!!
ReplyDeleteReally, our ideas are practical! They really are! You're just too stupid to make sense of them, you bitter clingers!
I wish I could read German so that I could read Rilke in his original translation. Still, I love my side-by-side translated copy of The Book of Images and pull it out whenever I need inspirational thought.
ReplyDeleteas for my favorite poets, I named my blog from an Emily Dickinson poem, so I suppose my favorite is a bit obvious, no?
My favourite poet is Tennison. Oh but, Annakata, what a glorious clip of Nat. Thank you so much. I feel all mushy and mellow now! Lots of love, Amanda
ReplyDeleteThey say eyes clear with age,
ReplyDeleteAs dew clarifies air
To sharpen evenings,
As if time put an edge
Round the last shape of things
To show them there;
The many-levelled trees,
The long soft tides of grass
Wrinkling away the gold
Wind-ridden waves- all these,
They say, come back to focus
As we grow old.
Yesterday I happily announced the first fall day, but I was all wrong.....it's today. When Fall comes I always find my poetry books: Rainer Maria Rilke, Hilde Domin, Federico García Lorca and Juan Ramón Jiménez are amongst my favorites.
ReplyDeleteThat's the beauty of life.. It gives you hope and then betrays in the form of an illusion! Crooked is its style and Wicked is its smile. You are baffled by the way it treats and undermines your judgment as ever.Makes you cantankerous with the way it forces you to channelize your outlook...It winks with a grin and howl's while it grins. It's complicated and perplexing while you make an attempt to decrypt. Its like the devil wearing the prada. The vampire in disguise of an angel. Cry out loud.. but the plea wont be heard. Surrender cause this race would never end.. Life would always be a step ahead of you; fooling, laughing and making fun of you. Teasing is its general trait. At the end Crucify .
