Clinton Aide to Plead Guilty to Drunken Driving
By Julie Bosman
Sidney Blumenthal, a campaign adviser to Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, has agreed to plead guilty to a charge of drunken driving stemming from his Jan. 7 arrest in Nashua, N.H., the night before the New Hampshire primary.
Mr. Blumenthal will be fined $750 and lose his license for 10 months. He was arrested on Jan. 7 after a police officer observed him driving 70 m.p.h. in a 30-m.p.h. speed limit zone.
Mr. Blumenthal was originally charged with aggravated drunken driving, a more serious charge, and was ordered to appear in court on Friday. But his trial was moved forward because the police officer who arrested him was activated by the military and ordered to Iraq, and would not have been able to testify in court, according to a report in the Nashua Telegraph.
A plea and sentencing hearing has been scheduled for April 18.
An author, former journalist and communications aide in the Clinton White House, Mr. Blumenthal is a longtime friend and confidante of Mrs. Clinton.
